A signwriter

In recent times OSmaps-online / Stanfords has enjoyed a close relationship with the BSGA and, as a result, we like to keep abreast of any changes to legislation that may affect the requirements of its members.

The following is a set of guidelines produced on the back of the recent smoke free legislation. As a result we have seen a dramatic increase in signwriters' requirement for OS 1:1250 and 1:500 A4 location plans for planning permission:

Advertisements

If you propose to provide new external signs, for example, to direct customers to smoking shelters, you may need to make a separate application for advertisement consent and/or listed building consent.

The main concerns in deciding whether to grant advertisement consent will be:

  • highway safety - for example, would the sign cause obstruction to pedestrians or traffic?
  • amenity - would the sign be visually obtrusive - particularly in a conservation area, or on a listed building - or add to advertisement clutter?

Remember all smoke-free premises will need to display signs that meet the requirements of the law. If you are not sure whether you need advertisement consent for a new sign then please contact the Planning Department.

If your client's new signage fits into the above categories and requires planning permission they will almost certainly require the accompanying OS site location and block plans.

Orders can be placed online or direct from your desktop through our Desktop mapping and Stanfords GeoStore services.
